Blog Post 3: Shape, Scale, Colors

Blog Post 3: Shape, Scale, Colors

Gesture/Scribble

During my thirty minutes of gesture drawing/scribbling, these were my three favorites.

Shape:

The three major shapes of my character is a triangle, a circle, and rectangles. I chose a triangular shape for the body shape because when doing my image research, I found that people that were more "Ambitious" and had "Determination" had more triangular shaped bodies and gestures. I chose a more circular shape for the head because in the Aesthetics of Game Art and Design, it states that "Circle: innocence, youth, energy, femininity" Chris Solarski (2021, August 24) and I wanted my character to look more youthful. Lastly, I gave my character rectangular legs because when I was looking up "Eccentric" I found more images that were longer and leaner.

Scale

For the scale of my character, I chose to make my character that tall because "realistic and adult humans range from 7 to 8 head to body height" Sivers, Y. (2021, August 25). My character was about 6-7 heads tall because I wanted it to resemble a younger adult. On the right, I make the characters legs smaller which would resemble closer to an athletic child. On the left, I elongated the head and some of the feet which shows makes the character resemble something less human-like, maybe this being is from a different species or is more cartoonish.

Colors

When choosing a color palette for my character, I knew I wanted to use darker colors because of my image research. After reading Color in Video Games: How to Choose a Palette, I found the colors that matched the adjectives best were "Red: Strong emotions like love, lust, anger, as well as warmth." and "Black: Mystery, evil, or grief." Stewart, D. (2021, August 25). I felt that the warmth of red and the mystery of black matched my high concept adjectives, "dry, hot, and inquisitive", that I used for my character. For my color variation, I decided to try and use inverse colors to see what an opposite color scheme would look like on my character. I'm not a big fan of how it turned out but I'll definitely keep working on it with other gestures and more clothing image research.
